The only constant is change.

That was true when the Greek philosopher Heraclitus said it thousands of years ago, and it’s just as true today. You get married or divorced. Welcome a new family member. Lose a job. Run your own business and experience an unanticipated off-year.

Everything changes constantly. But does your healthcare insurance keep up? It does if you or your family carry a Covered California plan. Learn all about Covered California life changes and special enrollment periods.

The rate you pay for your coverage — your premium — is based on a set of facts and details learned about you, including your income and family situation. If you seek coverage for a family of two, that fact helps determine your premium. But what happens if your family count increases by one with the birth or adoption of your child? Now your coverage must cover the healthcare needs of three people instead of two. How do you make that happen?

Is your insurer ready for this big changeup? How do you report the change and update your health insurance mid-year?

It’s not too difficult if you have a Covered California plan. Simply make the changes during open enrollment. Except when that’s not the ideal solution.

Open enrollment is the annual period when you can enroll in or change your health insurance policy. It is usually from the first of November through January. If you know then that your life is in the process of changing — or soon will — you can amend your policy’s coverage terms to accommodate those changes. You can theoretically set the record straight and get coverage benefits that protect your new life situation or cost less if the life change has made your income drop.

But guess what. Life changes don’t always (or even usually) wait for an annual open enrollment period. They can happen all at once, such as when you unexpectedly lose a job and suddenly need new coverage. Or you get married. Or divorced. Or have any life changes that can’t and don’t wait for the calendar page to turn to your open enrollment period. That’s when it is time to take advantage of the Special Enrollment period.

Covered California life changes include such dramatic events as moving to the state, losing a job and its healthcare benefits, suffering a significant drop in income and no longer being able to afford your current healthcare, getting married or divorced, bringing a new baby home, or ending active duty military service and losing access to federal benefits.

The common denominator in all of those life changes and others is that they change the terms of your healthcare benefits or open up a need to get some form of coverage or find a more affordable plan. You might either be without any form of coverage, or your existing benefits are insufficient for your current needs (such as when you add a member to your family or lose your now former spouse’s healthcare access).

When any of these and similar life-changing events happen, you have an immediate need to update or upgrade your health insurance mid-year in California. Covered California literally has you covered. If your income changes, your Covered California premiums might be adjusted downward.

It’s relatively easy. If the life change results in the need to obtain Covered California coverage for the first time, such as when moving to the state or losing a job that included benefits, you can apply online or by phone.

At Acceptance, we want you and your family to have the best health insurance for the best price. Perhaps you’re self-employed and your business is down, or you’ve lost your job — whatever the reasons, you can request a drop in the rate you pay for your Covered California plan as your income drops.

You might also wish to add another member to your plan, such as when you give birth or adopt a child. Whatever the need, making mid-year changes to your plan is not difficult.

You can do it online by logging in to your account and navigating to the “Report a Change” section. Here, you’ll report the details of the life change for which you’re requesting a change to your cost or benefits. With this application, you’re applying to make changes during a special enrollment period, or SEP.

Covered California will request documentation that can serve as evidence of the qualifying life change. That might mean tax records, birth or marriage certificates, divorce decree, evidence of job termination, or similar.

The website will guide you through the process. Once all relevant information has been submitted, the program will review your application, and you’ll receive a letter of approval or denial within 45 days.

How Life Changes Can Impact Your Covered California Health Insurance
